Open pollinated means you can save seed from your own plants and expect it to
grow “true to type” - provided it hasn’t cross-pollinated. Unlike the hybrid varieties popular today- seed from hybrids will not grow true to type - you have to buy new seed each year.
Chives belong to the Allium genus, which also includes garlic, onions, and leeks. Chives, are a green vegetable with a mild onion-like flavor. People have cultivated chives for centuries for their characteristic pungent flavors in cooking and their medicinal properties.
Chives also contain a small amount of choline. Choline is an important nutrient that helps maintain the structure of cellular membranes., helping with mood, memory, muscle control, and other brain and nervous system functions.
Chives contain vitamin K, which is important for bone health and blood clotting, they are also a good source of folate. Folate may help with dementia/alzheimers, cancer, congenital heart defects, cognitive function, cardiovascular disease and stroke and depression.
